“If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.”
Meister Eckhart
The following story was submitted by a participant of the Prayer Experiment about a miracle she experienced whilst working in Rwanda.
It’s an important and profound story for many reasons. Remember, I started the Prayer Experiment as a direct response to my own heartfelt prayer. I knew that participants would experience their own miracles – big and small – so I wasn’t surprised when I started getting feedback from the volunteers about their results. However, the following story is not at all what I expected. I cried when I read it as the implications began to dawn on me.
Not only did this miracle occur during the week when our small volunteer group was testing the validity of Meister Eckhart’s famous quote (which appears at the top of this page), it also showed me for the first time that our group’s prayer energy had “spilled out” from the confines of the group to impact lives halfway around the world; people who were not directly involved in the experiment and knew nothing about it.
This is the story that showed me, without any doubt, that prayer can truly change the world.
“I had been working on a very tricky legal contract for over a year in Rwanda. Shifting my project to be a social enterprise (the artisans would own the business). Universally it was the right thing to do, but I had a huge roadblock – a woman named [name removed] that didn’t want to share the business with the workers. So, on Tuesday, day 3 of the “thank you” prayer, I was sitting in her house speaking directly from my heart, authentically, to try and convince this woman that has only known hard times and not very educated, that it was the right thing to do to set up a social enterprise. This way the entire community would benefit from the project.
While in her house, the strangest thing happened: it was 5:11 pm for literally 30 minutes!
Time on the wall, on my watch, did not move. Yet we continued our conversation in light (literally). I knew at that moment I was not in charge but something much bigger than me took over. During those 30 minutes – which time did not move – she had a change of heart and agreed to all the changes. This meeting that had been building up for over a year was resolved in that timeframe. What was more interesting was I could tell she was genuinely moved. She lit up and I could tell that she was happy with her decision.
I have no idea what happened that Tuesday afternoon at 5:11 pm for 30 minutes – other than a divine miracle. I knew there was something special about the prayer exercise you asked us to do for a month.
I am most grateful to you for helping me navigate some very challenging situations with grace and support beyond my wildest dreams.”
Time stopped in Rwanda! Time stopped and a miracle was wrought in the heart of the woman who didn’t want to share prosperity with her community. It blows me away even now, over three years later.
If you remember, the prayer volunteers were focusing on the topic of prosperity. Through the focus of this small group, a miracle occurred that created prosperity for an entire community of artisans in a distant country in Africa.
So yes, Meister Eckhart was right when he said that a simple prayer of “thank you” is enough. If you are new to prayer, or you are on the fence, I invite you to test Meister Eckhart’s promise for yourself.
