“Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee.”
Job 22:28
Last time, I shared with you Nantene’s helpful insight that prayer comes in many forms. Well, one of my favourite forms is Affirmative Prayer.
You may know this type of prayer by another name, such as affirmations, scientific prayers, declarations, Prayers of Decree, Speaking the Word, or the Law of Command.
Unlike “Asking Prayers,” where you ask the Divine to respond to a request (like I wrote about here) Affirmative Prayers are powerful creative statements of that which you’d like to “be established unto thee” – as the Biblical quote above states.
The creative power of words is nothing new. If you’ve been a New Thought or metaphysical student you’ve certainly come across this teaching in various forms – whether you’ve thought of it as a form of prayer or not.
Even yogic teachings, such as that of Paramahansa Yogananda, acknowledge this fundamental truth.
“Any word spoken with clear realization and deep concentration has a materializing value.”
Paramahansa Yogananda
I first came across the power of affirmations through the work of Louise Hay, which I wrote about in my soul-mate book. I used a simple statement on my way to and from work, which resulted in my being offered some high-paying project work on top of my low paying secretary’s salary. The affirmation I used was: I deserve the best and I accept the best now.
I’ve gone on to have many more happy results with this type of prayer; two of my favourites I’ve written about here:
The easiest way to get started with Affirmative Prayer is to spend 5 to 10 minutes per day thinking, speaking or writing your chosen affirmation. You could use one I’ve already shared, or you could check out some of my treasured prayer resources, such as the writings of Florence Scovel Shinn, Catherine Ponder, and Paramahansa Yogananda.
There will be more Affirmative Prayer stories to come. In the meantime, feel free to share your own stories and favourite affirmations with me.
