I’m always on the hunt for miracles. They are my version of old coins, fine wines, or great art. I find miracle stories in the most interesting places. The most recent addition to my collection comes from Trevor Noah’s book Born a Crime, which I wasn’t expecting.
Trevor’s memoir is great on so many levels. No wonder it has been a best-seller since it came out. I found out about it from Bill Gates’ biannual list of his favourite books. If you read it just for the stories of Trevor’s childhood, you’ll be well rewarded. But there is a miracle story at the end which is, for me, the real gem of the book.
Spoiler alert! If you want to read about the miracle for yourself, skip to the “Spoiler over!” section below.
Trevor’s mum is ultra-religious. Her faith has gotten her into (and out of, to be fair) dangerous situations throughout her life. Her motto, “If God is with me who can be against me,” can seem naive, especially in the high-crime areas of South Africa.
When Trevor was young, he spent most of his Sundays attending three different churches, until he was a bit older when he only had to attend two.
His mum’s faith is a major theme throughout the book. As a reader, you get the impression that her faith is unfounded. Yet, when his mum is confronted by her abusive ex-husband holding a gun to her head, and the gun miraculously misfires every time her ex pulls the trigger, and then when she manages to run away and gets a bullet through her head and stills manages to survive with minimal damage, you find out that perhaps her faith isn’t unfounded after all. Even the doctors and gun experts declared it a miracle.
Spoiler over!
